RDV sur le Parking de la Pyramide de Condé Route de Bassac 16200 Triac-Lautrait
With this new storytelling walk, I invite you to discover the peaceful village of Triac, set amidst the vineyards between Jarnac and Bassac.
In 1569, during the Wars of Religion between Catholics and Protestants, it was the scene of the terrible battle of March 13th. It was here that Louis 1er de Bourbon, known as the Prince de Condé, leader of the Protestant troops, was tragically killed on the orders of the Duke of Anjou, the future Henry III. Had Condé's death not occurred, this battle of just a few hours would certainly not have been called a "Battle". Forgotten, or even confused with the Duel de Jarnac (or Coup de Jarnac), this battle deserves to be rediscovered in situ, where the Pyramide de Condé was built, a commemorative monument to this great Protestant war leader.
Nestling in the heart of the village and overlooking the Château (owned by the Braastad-Tiffon trading house), the Church of St. Romain boasts an interesting architecture with its campanile bell tower. A former Benedictine priory belonging to St Cybard d’Angoulême Abbey, its history was intertwined with that of Bassac Abbey until the French Revolution. Caught in the crossfire of the violent battles of the 16th century, notably in 1569, the church remains one of the historic landmarks of this village, which can be proud of its heritage.
